He earned his medical degree from the University of Iceland and completed an internal medicine residency at the University of Iowa. He subsequently completed a fellowship in Hematology and Medical Oncology at Mayo Clinic, Minnesota. Dr. Halfdanarson was on faculty as a medical oncologist and neuroendocrine specialist at the University of Iowa after completing his fellowship in 2007 until he transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Arizona where he was for three years. He has been on faculty at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota since 2015.
Dr. Halfdanarson specializes in GI oncology with a focus on neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Dr. Halfdanarson is a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines panel for NETs and a member of the North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (NANETS) guidelines panel for management of NETs.
Dr. Halfdanarson currently serves as Vice President for the North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (NANETS).
